Description

Sitka Salmon Shares, a growing and unique values-driven seafood company, seeks a fisheries scientist ready to make change in our domestic seafood system. The Fisheries Science and Policy Director will play a key role in driving innovation and improvement towards the Company’s goal of being an industry leader in environmentally-friendly, quality-focused, socially-responsible seafood. This position will work closely with the Company’s supply chain leadership and our growing fleet of fishermen owners to proactively monitor fish stocks and management decisions. The Director will actively contribute to company communications and develop strategies to ensure that the company is responsive to the growing impacts of climate change on fisheries in Alaska.

Location: Anchorage, AK or Sitka, AK; possibly other Alaska coastal communities.

Reports to: Chief Fisheries Officer

Duties:

  • For the approximately 13-15 fisheries that the Company has an interest in, proactively monitor stock assessments, fishery performance, harvest estimates, trends in stocks, climate impacts, other resource impacts (development proposals, legal actions), as well as management/policy decisions to inform harvest, seasonal processing, and sourcing strategies.
  • Lead fisheries engagement and advocacy for the Company and fleet to advance harvest and resource interests of the company and fleet as related to the Board of Fish, North Pacific Fishery Management Council, International Halibut Commission, and other relevant management bodies.
  • Provide scientific perspective to underpin the Company’s seafood sourcing decisions and harvest strategy, including from partner fishermen and suppliers in the lower-48.
  • Work cooperatively with the Company’s growing fleet of fishermen owners and partners to develop new seafood supply chain opportunities such as experimental fishing permits, new species/regional harvests, etc.
  • Proactively engage the fleet in sustainability practices and projects that advance the company as a leader in responsible fishing practices. These might include projects such as bycatch reduction, whale avoidance, fuel efficiency, ocean acidification monitoring, etc.
  • Play an active role as a voice of the company in communications by creating and editing communications materials that advance the company as a leader in responsible fisheries. These may include blogs, emails, species profiles, etc.
  • Potentially advance the company’s participation in certification programs including Responsible Fisheries Management, or similar, to ensure integrity of our supply chain.
Required Experience & Skills:
  • PhD preferred, Masters degree considered in fisheries science or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in fisheries/ocean science, including at least 3+ years working directly in commercial fisheries management and policy.
  • Possess an understanding and ability to participate and engage in fisheries management and policy decisions. This includes ability to develop and deliver effective oral and written comments/testimony.
  • Demonstrated skill and ability for science writing that is accessible to the general public.
  • Influential, collaborative, professional demeanor. Ability to work effectively with fishermen.
  • Ability to conceptualize and develop project ideas and advance them with company leaders, the fleet, and funders, including developing and submitting grant proposals.
  • Intermediate or advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Alignment with the social and environmental values of the Company.
  • Ability to travel across coastal Alaska, and occasionally to lower-48 or other destinations.
