About Our Company: Founded in 2012 by a food systems professor from the Midwest and a fisherman from Sitka, Alaska, Sitka Salmon Shares is now one of the nation’s largest and fastest-growing community-supported fisheries (CSF). Modeled after community-supported agriculture (CSA), we provide high-quality traceable seafood with a purpose to tens of thousands of home cooks. We source our fish from our network of small-boat fishermen-owners and partners and also process fish at our plant in Sitka, Alaska. Our company is built on the values of supporting Alaska’s family fishermen and cultivating healthy and responsible food systems in the places we live, work, fish, and play. 

 

About The Position: Sitka Salmon Shares has a passion for storytelling. We believe in the power of stories to inspire, inform, entertain, and delight. Great stories create tremendous value for our company and, of course, for our CSF members and our fishermen. 

 

As a values-based CSF, our most prominent and important stories come from our growing fleet of fishermen-owners. The senior manager of Alaska communications is responsible for launching a comprehensive fishermen ambassador program that will build an arsenal of stories from and about our fishermen, Alaska lifestyle, and Alaska seafood/fisheries. This position is part storyteller, part project manager. They will be tasked with introducing new storytelling concepts and building other creative assets that can be shared on a variety of mediums to ensure our members know our fishermen through consistent engagement. They will also need to manage project deliverables with a growing base of contributors and work closely with the senior director of communications and the fisheries and fleet director to seamlessly build relationships with our fleet, enhance internal communications, and refine the new program as needed. 

 

To be successful in this role, the senior manager must reside in Alaska, have a strong understanding of the fisheries world, knowledge of the challenges being small-boat fishermen, experience building community through storytelling, demonstrated project management skills, and a commitment to environmental stewardship.

 

CORE POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Audit current fishermen's output to identify successes, areas to improve, and pain points to develop data-driven best practices that elevate fishermen contributions at a faster and more consistent rate.
  • Work cooperatively and build strong relationships with the company’s growing fleet of fishermen owners and partners to build community through fishermen stories that align with our mission and goals.
  • Create a fishermen ambassador program, from the ground up that can scale over the course of the next two years to hundreds of participants, that builds community between our fishermen and members.
  • Lead on-the-ground components of photoshoots and videos based in Alaska. 
  • Accurately tell stories about Alaska fisheries and ocean health, Alaska-specific lifestyle/food/foraging, and our small boat fishermen through visual and written stories formatted to the specifications of owned and paid media channels.
  • Work with the fisheries team to monitor and maintain knowledge of important fisheries and ocean conservation issues and those that impact small-boat fleets to elevate to the rest of the communications and community team.
  • Work closely with the communications team to develop communications materials that inform and engage our members on topics including fisheries conservation, coastal communities, small-boat fisheries, and food systems.
  • Work with the senior manager of content creative to keep developed materials organized and widely accessible. 
  • Act as Sitka Salmon Shares’ fisherman-owner expert in developing best practices, telling stories, and introducing technologies to help fishermen better communicate.

 

DESIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of experience in a relevant field, preferably in communications at Alaska fisheries, coastal community nonprofits, or conservation-focused businesses
  • Self-starter, natural problem solver, with a positive attitude and ability to work independently with minimal guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct and project manage a multi-faceted program across different company pillars with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of storyboarding and ability to convey stories through a variety of mediums to build community through digital marketing including social media
  • Ability to meet our fleet at the docks, on the water during hours and days that work for our fleet
  • Intermediate or advanced design, audio, photography, and video editing skills 
  • Strong interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills
  • Big picture thinker and doer with an eye for detail, a high level of integrity and dependability, and demonstrated experience in fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and dynamic environments. 
  • Passion for local food, community, and/or environmental stewardship, with a strong desire to learn more about fisheries and seafood. 
 

JOB SCOPE AND COMPENSATION:

  • Full-time position, with an expected weekly workload of 40 hours including some nights and weekends, depending on deadlines and projects 
  • Ability to travel across coastal Alaska throughout the year, along with 1-3 trips to Madison, Wisconsin per year (pending safety considerations and health mandates) for team meetings and summits and strategic planning sessions
  • Yearly reviews will be done to assess position and pay. There is a 3-month probationary period.

  • Will pay for relocation to Sitka -- up to 50% travel if based in Alaska community outside of Sitka
