Modeled after community-supported agriculture (CSA), we provide high-quality traceable seafood with a purpose to tens of thousands of home cooks. We source our fish from our network of small-boat fishermen-owners and partners and also process fish at our plant in Sitka, Alaska. About The Position: Sitka Salmon Shares has a passion for storytelling. We believe in the power of stories to inspire, inform, entertain, and delight. Great stories create tremendous value for our company and, of course, for our CSF members and our fishermen.
As a values-based CSF, our most prominent and important stories come from our growing fleet of fishermen-owners. This communications manager is responsible for harnessing the stories of our fishermen for use in a wide array of mediums (social posts, emails, direct mail, videos, photos, etc.) throughout the year, as well as creating compelling communications materials.
This position will work closely with the chief officer of communications and community, he senior director of communications, and the fisheries and fleet director to create and implement a new fishermen ambassador program that will work in tandem with the communications, social engagement, member delight, culinary, and fisheries teams.
To be successful in this role, the manager must reside in Sitka, Alaska, have a strong understanding of the fisheries world including the nuances of a fisherman’s schedule, a passion for building community through storytelling, an eye for visual design, a strong ability to build relationships with a variety of personalities, strong communications experience, a good sense of humor, and a commitment to environmental stewardship.
CORE POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Audit current fishermen output to identify successes, areas to improve, and pain points, to develop data-driven best practices that elevate fishermen's contributions at a faster and more consistent rate.
- Work cooperatively and build strong relationships with the company’s growing fleet of fishermen owners and partners to build community through fishermen stories that align with our mission and goals.
- Create a fishermen ambassador program from the ground up that can scale over the course of the next two years.
- Develop strategic fishermen videos, visual and written stories, and marketing and communications collateral, while overseeing the process from script development to production.
- Accurately translate stories about Alaska fisheries and ocean health and small-scale fisheries through storytelling.
- Work with the fisheries team to monitor and maintain knowledge of important fisheries and ocean conservation issues and those that impact small-boat fleets to elevate to the rest of the communications and community team.
- Work closely with the communications team to develop communications materials that inform and engage our members on topics including fisheries conservation, coastal communities, small-boat fisheries, and food systems.
- Act as Sitka Salmon Shares’ fisherman-owner expert in developing best practices, telling stories, and introducing technologies to help fishermen better communicate.
DESIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years of experience in a relevant field, preferably in communications at Alaska fisheries, coastal community nonprofits, or conservation-focused businesses
- Big-picture thinker and doer with an eye for detail and demonstrated experience in fast-paced and dynamic environments
- Self-starter and natural problem solver with the ability to work independently with minimal guidance
- Demonstrated ability to direct a multi-faceted program across different company pillars with multiple stakeholders
- Strong understanding and experience with storyboarding and the importance of storytelling in building community
- Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills
- Ability to flex to a variety of individual preferences, skillset barriers, and unforeseen circumstances
- Ability to craft inspiring written and visual stories customized by medium (e.g., audio, visual, digital, written) and audience (e.g., fishermen, members)
- Passion for local food, community, and environmental stewardship, with direct experience in, or a strong desire to learn more about, fisheries and seafood
- Intermediate or advanced design, audio, and video editing skills
- Professional photography and videography experience a plus
JOB SCOPE AND COMPENSATION:
- Full-time position, with an expected weekly workload of 40 hours including some nights and weekends, depending on deadlines and projects
- Must work extensively in Sitka AK, with the potential to live in Sitka, or commute from Juneau Alaska
- Ability to travel across coastal Alaska throughout the year, along with 1-3 trips to Madison, Wisconsin per year (pending safety considerations and health mandates) for team meetings and summits and strategic planning sessions
- Yearly reviews will be done to assess position and pay.
